Federal Government Approves $673M to Aid Canada Post

Share:

The federal government is providing Canada Post with $673 million to ensure the postal service remains operational this fiscal year. A cabinet order has been issued to allow the Crown corporation to meet its financial obligations until next March. This funding comes after a previous $1.03 billion cash injection and another billion dollars in repayable funding that was authorized last year, but ultimately fell short of sustaining the postal service.

Carleton University business professor Ian Lee suggests that Canada Post will likely need even more funding to get through the year, considering the corporation's $1.57 billion loss before tax in 2025. Lee described the funding as "bailouts" issued in smaller portions to lessen the impact of the optics. He also stated that "Canada Post is insolvent... which is the inability to meet your obligations as they become due".

Canada Post has reported a $1.57 billion loss before tax in 2025, which is a 46% increase from the previous year. The corporation has lost nearly $5.4 billion between 2018 and 2025. Amidst declining demand for letters and parcels, Canada Post has stated it needs to modernize through reforms like community mailboxes and possible post office closures.

Canada Post and its union have been in disputes over wages and structural changes for over two years. As Canada Post begins its transformation, it faces major financial challenges and continues to access repayable funding from the government to maintain solvency.
