Climate Change Doubled Likelihood of NWT, Ontario Wildfires

Human-induced climate change approximately doubled the likelihood of the extreme fire weather conditions that fueled recent wildfires in Canada's Northwest Territories and Ontario, according to a new analysis. The study, conducted by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) initiative, found that fires of this intensity are no longer rare events in today's climate.

The research focused on periods of extreme fire weather in both regions and compared them to historical data and climate models. In a world without human-induced climate change, such extreme fire weather would have occurred less than once every 40 years. However, in the current climate, these events are now expected to occur once every two to six years in the Northwest Territories and once every six to 15 years in Ontario.

Scientists involved in the study emphasized that this finding should not be surprising, given the decades of scientific consensus linking fossil fuel consumption to more frequent and intense wildfires. This year's wildfire season has already seen over 3.8 million hectares burned across the country, displacing thousands and impacting air quality far beyond the affected regions. The analysis underscores the urgent need for global action to mitigate climate change and adapt to its escalating impacts.
