Western University Students Face Explosives Charges in London, Ontario

Share:

Four individuals, all current or former students of Western University in London, Ontario, are facing charges related to the possession of explosives and firearms. The charges stem from an investigation that began with a trespassing incident on the university campus in late January.

The incident led police to a residence on Chesham Avenue, near the university, where they discovered "numerous precursor substances and finished high explosives," along with firearms and evidence of weapons manufacturing. The Explosives Disposal Unit was called to the scene, and the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), which handles cases involving terrorism, espionage, and foreign interference, has joined the investigation.

The accused have been identified as Jerry Tong, Zekun Wang, Fei Han, and Feiyang Ji. Police confirmed that all four are or were students at Western University. Search warrants were executed at residences in London, Ottawa, and Gatineau, Quebec. While police are aware of a YouTube video appearing to show the accused working on an anti-drone system, authorities stated that the charges laid against them do not relate to that device.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have not commented on the specific motives or intentions of the accused. The case has sparked concern in the University Heights neighborhood near Western's campus, and some students have expressed concern about communication from the university regarding the incident. The investigation continues to unfold with the involvement of national security agencies.
