A horrific mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has claimed the lives of 10 people, including the suspected shooter. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a connected residence, sending shockwaves through the small northern community and across the country.

The RCMP responded to reports of an active shooter at the school around 1:20 p. m. local time. Upon entering the school, officers discovered multiple victims and the deceased suspect, who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted injury. Six other victims were found dead inside the school, with another passing away en route to the hospital. Two more victims were located at a residence connected to the incident. In addition to the fatalities, two individuals were airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries, and approximately 25 others were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local clinic.

The emergency alert issued during the shooting urged residents to shelter in place but was lifted after approximately four and a half hours when authorities determined there was no further threat to the public. RCMP North District Commander, Superintendent Ken Floyd, acknowledged the rapid and dynamic nature of the situation, thanking first responders and the community for their swift cooperation. He stated that police believe they have identified the suspect but are not releasing details pending family notifications.

The incident is the deadliest attack connected to a Canadian school in nearly 40 years and the third-deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history. British Columbia Premier David Eby expressed his condolences, acknowledging the tragedy feels like "the kind of thing that happens in other places and not close to home". Both the elementary and secondary schools in Tumbler Ridge will remain closed for the remainder of the week as the community grapples with the devastating loss.
