Flights at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) experienced delays Wednesday after a suspicious suitcase was found on an arriving flight. The incident prompted a temporary reduction in incoming air traffic and the closure of one of the airport's runways. According to airport spokesperson Eric Forest, standard security protocols were activated to ensure public safety.
The situation unfolded when a "package of interest" was identified on an Air Canada flight, leading to the closure of one of the airport's two runways. The FAA issued a ground stop for flights bound for Montreal, causing further disruptions. However, operations began returning to normal around 5 p. m. after authorities determined there was no threat to passengers.
Adding to the heightened security measures, two international flights bound for Montreal were escorted by NORAD fighter jets, including CF-18s and F-16s. Upon landing, Quebec provincial police arrested two men, one in his 20s and the other in his 30s. Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesperson Béatrice Dorsainville stated that the men are being questioned and could face fraud-related charges.
While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have confirmed there is no current threat to the traveling public at YUL. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for potential flight delays. The incident underscores the vigilance of airport security and the coordinated response of various agencies to ensure the safety of air travel in Canada.
