The Toronto Raptors delivered a performance for the ages on Sunday, dismantling the Orlando Magic in a 139-87 victory fueled by a record-breaking 31-0 run. The Raptors' suffocating defense and relentless offense left the Magic bewildered and scoreless for nearly eight minutes, spanning the first and second quarters.
The historic run wasn't immediately recognized by the players themselves. Scottie Barnes, who recorded his 28th double-double of the season with 23 points and a career-high 15 assists, admitted he was simply caught up in the intensity of the game. "I didn't know that that was even happening," said Barnes. "I just know we were all just super locked in, just trying to keep causing turnovers and keep playing as hard as we can on defence that it just helped the lead grow for us".
The 31-0 run surpassed the previous NBA record of 30-0, set by the Dallas Mavericks against the Oklahoma City Thunder in December 2023. Adding a unique Canadian connection, AJ Lawson of Brampton, Ontario, who is currently on a two-way contract with the Raptors, was also on the Mavericks team during their record-setting run. Sandro Mamukelashvili, contributing 19 points off the bench, played a key role in sparking Toronto's momentous streak. "I think it was so fun playing that you just don't realize anything like (the run). You just keep going," said Mamukelashvili.
With the playoffs in sight, this dominant win against a team that is playoff bound is a statement win for the Raptors, highlighting their potential to make a deep run. The Raptors' cohesive teamwork, stifling defence, and ability to capitalize on turnovers proved to be the perfect recipe for a historic performance that will be remembered by Canadian basketball fans for years to come.
