Pokémon Card Thefts Surge Across Canada, Targetting Collectibles Shops

Pokémon cards, once a playground staple, have become a hot commodity for thieves across Canada. Collectibles shops in British Columbia and other provinces have reported a surge in break-ins, with thieves specifically targeting valuable Pokémon cards. The escalating value of these cards, with some fetching thousands or even millions of dollars, is fueling the trend.

In Burnaby, BC, Captured Cards owner Leon Chan has been hit three times in six months, with thieves making off with thousands of dollars in cards and display cases. Chan says the repeated break-ins take a heavy toll on him and his family. Similarly, Brandon Chreptyk, president of House of Cards in Abbotsford, BC, experienced a pre-dawn break-in where thieves stole approximately $30,000 worth of Pokémon cards. "They were targeting us for Pokémon cards specifically, which seems to be a trend right now," Chreptyk noted.

Police are investigating the thefts, with some forces forming task forces to address the issue. Authorities suggest that a lack of a market for stolen cards would deter thieves and are cautioning collectors against purchasing potentially stolen merchandise. Some store owners are taking extra precautions, including installing bars on windows and sophisticated security systems. The tight-knit gaming community has also rallied to support affected shops, with some customers even donating their own cards to help replenish stolen stock.

The Pokémon card craze, fueled by nostalgia and investment opportunities, has inadvertently created a lucrative target for criminals. As police work to catch the culprits, store owners and collectors are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
