Montreal Mayor's Husband Stopped by Police Repeatedly

Share:

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante has revealed that her husband, who is Black, was stopped by police at least five or six times last year, with no apparent reason. Plante made these statements as the Montreal police force faces increased scrutiny over allegations of racial profiling and misconduct.

The mayor's personal experience sheds light on broader concerns within the community regarding police interactions with racialized individuals. These revelations follow recent investigations into alleged racist and hateful acts by officers in the Montréal-Nord borough, which have led to 16 officers being placed under investigation. Reports from the area indicate that Black and Arab residents have been disproportionately targeted, with disturbing allegations including officers collecting pieces of hair as trophies.

Recent data indicates that Black individuals in Montreal are four times more likely to be stopped by police than white individuals, and Arab individuals five times more likely. These statistics highlight a persistent issue of racial profiling, even after policy changes and reviews by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). Previous reports, including one from 2019 and another in 2023, have consistently shown disparities in police stops targeting racialized communities.

The Montreal police chief, Fady Dagher, has implemented new policies aimed at improving transparency and trust, including requiring officers to inform individuals why they are being stopped and that they are free to leave. However, advocacy groups argue that these measures do not go far enough and that stronger enforcement and consequences for officers are needed. The controversy continues to fuel calls for an independent public inquiry into systemic racism within the Montreal police force, with various community organizations and political figures demanding greater accountability.
