Connor McDavid's late-game heroics propelled the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night, halting the Avalanche's five-game win streak. McDavid's decisive goal, his 36th of the season, came on a power play with just under 11 minutes remaining in the third period, breaking a 3-3 deadlock.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contributed significantly with two goals for the Oilers, while Jack Roslovic also added a goal. Leon Draisaitl provided two assists, including one on McDavid's game-winning goal. The Oilers' victory came against a strong Avalanche team that boasts the NHL's best record.
The game wasn't without its controversies. Late in the second period, Oilers' goaltender Connor Ingram was injured in a collision with Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon, resulting in MacKinnon receiving a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. Ingram was replaced by Tristan Jarry, who made 11 saves in relief. Ross Colton, Martin Necas, and Valeri Nichushkin scored for the Avalanche. Colton also left the game with an upper-body injury.
Oilers' coach Kris Knoblauch praised his team's resilience, noting their ability to respond after Colorado scored early. Nugent-Hopkins echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team's trust in each other. The win is a significant one for the Oilers, marking their first victory in seven attempts against the top teams in the Central Division. It also serves as a response to a 9-1 loss to the Avalanche earlier in the season.
