Canadian tennis is experiencing a period of transition, marked by the end of one era and the promising rise of another. Victoria Mboko, the 19-year-old from Toronto, recently concluded her impressive run at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round before being defeated by world number one Aryna Sabalenka. Mboko's performance at the tournament is expected to propel her into the top 15 in the WTA rankings.
While Mboko's star is ascending, Canadian tennis legend Milos Raonic has formally announced his retirement from the sport. The former world No. 3 and Wimbledon finalist made the announcement on January 11, 2026, concluding a career that saw him win eight ATP Tour titles. Raonic's last sanctioned match was in July 2024 at the Paris Olympics.
Despite Raonic's departure, the future of Canadian tennis appears bright. Young talents like Mboko, Félix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, and Leylah Annie Fernandez are making their mark on the international stage. Tennis Canada reports that close to five million Canadians picked up a racquet in 2023, making Canada rank near the top globally for participation. The organization also faces the challenge of expanding facilities to meet the growing demand and promote tennis as a year-round sport.
