A member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, died on January 29, 2026, while deployed in Latvia. Halmagean was serving as part of Operation Reassurance, the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia.

The Department of National Defence announced Halmagean's death on Friday, January 30, 2026. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by the Latvian Military Police, with support from the Canadian Forces Military Police. To protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, further details will not be released at this time. Military officials have stated that there is no indication of an increased threat to the safety and security of deployed members.

Gunner Halmagean was originally from Hamilton, Ontario, and was posted to the 4th Artillery Regiment (General Support), Royal Canadian Artillery, based at 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick. He had served in the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly three years, and this was his first overseas deployment. Canada is the lead nation in the Latvia deployment, with approximately 2,000 troops stationed there as part of NATO's efforts to deter Russian aggression in Eastern Europe.

General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, expressed condolences on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces. Prime Minister Mark Carney extended Operation Reassurance in August for another three years through 2029.
