The National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) have announced that the Boston Bruins and the Edmonton Oilers will headline the 2027 NHL Global Series in Germany. The series will see the Bruins play two games in JJ Peterka's hometown of Munich, while the Oilers will play two games in Leon Draisaitl's native city of Cologne. These matchups represent the first-ever regular-season NHL games to be held in these German cities.
This initiative underscores the NHL's long-term commitment to growing the sport in Germany, a nation with a strong hockey tradition and a burgeoning fanbase. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly expressed excitement about bringing the league's speed and skill to passionate German fans, calling the events an "important step" in expanding the game's reach in Europe. The announcement also highlights the increasing global footprint of professional hockey.
The series is set to take place during the 2027-28 NHL season, with more specific details regarding schedules and ticketing to be released during the 2026-27 season. This expansion into Munich and Cologne follows previous NHL Global Series events in Germany, including games scheduled for Dusseldorf in December 2026 featuring the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks. The league aims to deepen engagement with fans and partners in Germany, further cementing its presence in one of Europe's most dynamic hockey markets.
The inclusion of Draisaitl, the first and only German player with over 1,000 career NHL points, and Peterka in their respective hometowns, is a significant draw for the series. Both players have been instrumental in promoting hockey in their home country, and their participation is expected to generate considerable local interest and excitement. This move aligns with the NHL's broader strategy to foster international growth and connect with fans worldwide.
