Residents in Windsor-Essex are being advised to exercise caution as a flood watch remains in effect. The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) issued the advisory late Sunday night, July 6, 2026, after more than 30 millimetres of rain were recorded in some areas within a 12-hour period. Environment Canada had previously issued a special weather statement on July 5, forecasting showers and thunderstorms that could bring upwards of 50 millimetres of rain to the region.
The ERCA stated that smaller watercourses are likely flowing at or near capacity, and additional rainfall could cause them to spill their banks into low-lying areas. The flood watch is expected to remain in place until at least 10 a. m. Monday. Authorities are urging the public to be cautious, avoid areas experiencing flooding, and stay clear of rivers, streams, and shorelines during periods of heavy rain and wind. This advisory comes after a series of severe weather events that have impacted Southern Ontario in early July, including heavy rainfall and strong winds that caused damage across Windsor-Essex on July 3rd. Residents are reminded to stay informed about weather updates and to take necessary precautions to protect their property.
The region has experienced a tumultuous start to July with multiple severe weather events. Just days prior, on July 3rd, a strong storm brought down trees and caused power outages throughout Windsor-Essex. Earlier in the week, on Canada Day, record-breaking rainfall caused widespread flooding in Ottawa, highlighting the ongoing challenges with severe weather across the province. The cumulative effect of these recent weather patterns has left the ground saturated, increasing the vulnerability to flooding.
