Veteran Toronto City Councillor Paula Fletcher has announced her retirement from municipal politics, concluding a 23-year career at City Hall. Fletcher, who represents Ward 14 Toronto—Danforth, confirmed on August 19, 2026, that she will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming municipal election, marking the end of her extensive service.
Fletcher's political journey began with the Toronto District School Board, where she served as a trustee before being elected to Toronto City Council in 2003. Throughout her tenure, she has been a strong advocate for affordable housing, public transit, parks, climate action, and community safety. She has held significant roles, including Chair of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee and Deputy Speaker of City Council. Her work has also extended to various boards, including CreateTO and TOLive, and she has been a dedicated voice for residents and community groups in her ward.
Her retirement comes as nominations for the 2026 Toronto election are closing, a timing that has prompted some discussion about allowing more time for potential candidates to prepare. Fletcher's departure marks the end of an era for Toronto municipal politics, leaving a significant void in council chambers. Her contributions to revitalizing communities and championing progressive policies have left a lasting impact on the city.
