Toronto Camp Celebrates BIPOC Women in Hockey

More than 200 young hockey players are taking to the ice this weekend at the Toronto Maple Leafs training facility for the Women of Colour Hockey Collective (WCHC) Summer Camp. The three-day event, held at the Ford Performance Centre, is designed to create a welcoming and celebratory space for BIPOC women and girls in hockey, addressing the sport's historical challenges with inclusivity.

"For a while we've known that hockey isn't necessarily the most welcoming sport, specifically to BIPOC women, so we aim to create a celebrating and welcoming space for BIPOC women in hockey," said Saroya Tinker, WCHC executive director. The camp offers training with players from the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) and aims to empower participants to be their authentic selves within the sport.

The program, now in its fourth year, focuses on building community and breaking down barriers. "Growing up, it was definitely tough being the only person of colour on my team and in different spaces," shared Sophie Jaques, a PWHL player who has supported the camp. "I think this camp would have been something to really help."

Beyond on-ice drills and skill development, the camp includes professional photo shoots and media training, aiming to provide a holistic experience that prepares young athletes for various aspects of professional sports. This initiative underscores a broader movement across Canada to make hockey more accessible and representative for all.
