The Trans-Canada Highway in the vicinity of Flat Bay Junction has been reopened to traffic following a significant collision that occurred earlier on August 20, 2026. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed that both lanes of the highway, located approximately six kilometres west of the Flat Bay Junction, are now accessible after being completely shut down for a period.
The incident, which prompted a full closure of the TCH in the Bay St. George region of Newfoundland's west coast, led to considerable travel delays for motorists. While the road is now open, authorities are cautioning drivers to remain vigilant, slow down, and follow directions from traffic control personnel. There is no detour available in the area, and intermittent closures may still occur into the evening as crews complete necessary work at the scene.
The RCMP responded to the collision in the afternoon, initially reporting that one lane was closed. However, concerns were raised that a full closure might be necessary as responders assessed the situation. Updates were provided throughout the day to inform the public about the status of the highway. The exact cause and nature of the collision have not yet been released by police.
