Statistics Canada to Release June Inflation Data Monday

Share:

Statistics Canada is set to release the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on Monday, July 20, which will detail the inflation rate for June 2026. This upcoming data is keenly anticipated by economists, businesses, and consumers alike, offering a snapshot of the economic landscape and its impact on the cost of living.

The May inflation rate saw a notable increase to 3.2 percent, up from 2.8 percent in April, exceeding market expectations. This rise was significantly influenced by a surge in gasoline prices, which increased by 33.2 percent. Food inflation also saw a moderate uptick, with fresh fruit and vegetables contributing to the overall climb. Despite these increases, core inflation measures remained relatively stable, indicating underlying price pressures were somewhat contained.

In response to the economic environment, the Bank of Canada has maintained its key interest rate at 2.25 percent. This decision, made on July 15, marks the sixth consecutive hold, reflecting a wait-and-see approach by the central bank. While the economy shows signs of improvement and growth is projected to pick up, uncertainties related to global events, such as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and trade relations with the United States, continue to influence monetary policy decisions. The Bank of Canada anticipates inflation will ease gradually in the latter half of 2026, aiming to return to its 2 percent target by early 2027. The upcoming June inflation figures will be a key indicator to watch for further insights into these economic trends and their implications for Canadians.
