An emergency alert that had been in effect across the Halifax Regional Municipality has been ended after a suspect was taken into custody on Saturday. The alert was issued due to a man believed to be involved in a shooting incident earlier in the day in Annapolis Royal, N. S.
Late Saturday morning, the RCMP issued an emergency alert for the Bedford area, specifically warning of a dangerous individual with a firearm in the wooded area behind Sunnyside Mall. The alert was later expanded to encompass the entire HRM around 12:15 p. m. before being rescinded shortly before 1 p. m. once the suspect was apprehended.
Halifax Regional Police had described the suspect as a 31-year-old white male, approximately six feet three inches tall, with brown hair and facial hair. He was considered armed and dangerous and the public was urged not to approach him. The search operation led to customers and staff at a local restaurant, The Chickenburger, being locked inside as police conducted their search. Eyewitnesses reported a significant police presence, including an RCMP helicopter. The swift resolution brought relief to residents who had been on edge during the alert.
