Senators urge Carney to reinstate antisemitism envoy

Share:

A bipartisan group of Senators has issued a formal call to Mark Carney, urging him to restore the position of special envoy on combating antisemitism and to intensify efforts in the fight against hate crimes. The appeal comes amid growing concerns about the rise in antisemitic incidents across Canada and a perceived lack of federal leadership on the issue.

The Senators argue that reinstating the envoy would send a clear message of solidarity to Jewish communities across the country and provide a dedicated resource for monitoring and addressing antisemitism. They also emphasize the importance of a coordinated national strategy to combat hate speech and hate-motivated crimes, working in collaboration with provincial and municipal governments, as well as community organizations.

"We must ensure that all Canadians feel safe and protected from hate," stated Senator David Wells, one of the signatories of the letter. "The restoration of the special envoy and a renewed commitment to combating antisemitism are critical steps in achieving that goal". The Senators further stated that the envoy would act as a crucial liaison between the government and the Jewish community, ensuring that concerns are heard and addressed effectively.

The call to action comes as Statistics Canada reports a concerning increase in hate crimes targeting religious and racial minorities. The Senators stressed the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action to prevent further escalation and protect vulnerable communities. It remains to be seen how Carney will respond to the Senators' request.
