The Ottawa Senators have officially traded captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in a move that reshapes both franchises. The deal, which was reported Sunday afternoon, sent Tkachuk to South Florida in exchange for a package of draft picks. This blockbuster trade reunites Brady with his older brother, Matthew, a key player for the Panthers.
The Senators will receive the ninth and 25th overall selections in the 2026 NHL Draft, a first-round pick in 2029, and a second-round pick in 2030 from the Panthers. This influx of draft capital signals a significant retooling for the Senators organization. Tkachuk, 26, has been a prominent offensive force for Ottawa, recording 22 goals and 59 points in 60 games last season. He also recently represented Team USA, winning a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics alongside his brother Matthew.
The Panthers, aiming to bolster their roster for a championship push, have acquired a proven top-six forward known for his aggressive play and net-front presence. Tkachuk is currently under contract through the 2027-28 season with an annual cap hit of $8.21 million. This move also addresses the Panthers' desire to reunite the Tkachuk brothers, a scenario that has been a topic of discussion following their Olympic success. The Panthers' acquisition of Tkachuk comes after a previous trade that saw them send forward Mackie Samoskevich to the Seattle Kraken for additional draft assets.
The Senators, having received a substantial return in draft picks, appear to be leveraging this opportunity to rebuild their prospect pool. The trade also comes after reports indicated Tkachuk might not have been looking to re-sign with Ottawa long-term. This deal marks the first major transaction of the NHL offseason and sets the stage for further moves as teams prepare for the upcoming season.
