Saskatchewan Workers Seek Relief as Heat Wave Intensifies

Share:

Saskatchewan is currently under a significant heat wave, prompting concerns for outdoor workers across the province. Environment Canada had issued heat warnings for many regions, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s for the remainder of the week. The extreme heat has led to increased awareness of heat-related illnesses and the need for preventative measures.

Several communities in southern Saskatchewan have already broken daily temperature records. Weyburn reached 34.3°C, while Assiniboia hit 33.9°C, highlighting the intensity of the heat wave. Environment Canada noted that some of these records date back to 1910, underscoring the unusual conditions. The Saskatchewan Safety Council is advising people to take it easier during this period of intense heat.

Employers are legally obligated to protect workers from heat stress disorders where environmental conditions cannot be adequately controlled. WorkSafe Saskatchewan provides resources and guidelines for employers to ensure workplace safety during hot conditions. These include measures such as providing suitable monitoring equipment, ensuring adequate hydration, and implementing engineering controls like air conditioning or shade structures.

Workers are encouraged to take frequent breaks in shaded areas and stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, dizziness, and intense fatigue. Environment Canada's David Phillips noted that the current temperatures are significantly above normal for this time of year, with some areas experiencing temperatures 15°C higher than usual.
