Saskatchewan Braces for Late-Season Snowstorm, Warnings in Effect

Share:

Saskatchewan is bracing for another spring snowstorm, with Environment Canada issuing weather warnings for multiple regions. A major weather system is expected to bring a mix of rain and heavy snow, creating potentially hazardous conditions that could extend into the weekend.

The storm, originating from a Montana low, is forecasted to move into Saskatchewan, bringing significant snowfall, particularly in the northeast where accumulations could reach up to 50 centimetres. Southern and central areas of the province can expect between 10 and 25 centimetres. The precipitation is expected to begin as rain in western and southern regions before transitioning to snow overnight into Thursday. There is also a risk of thunderstorms Wednesday evening in southern regions.

Environment Canada warns of potential travel disruptions due to blowing and falling snow reducing visibility, especially with strong northerly winds accompanying the storm. Freezing rain is also a concern, particularly in east-central Saskatchewan, which could lead to icy road conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

While the incoming moisture is welcomed by some, especially those in agricultural regions and wildfire experts, concerns remain about potential rapid melt and run-off if temperatures rise quickly. The public is advised to allow extra travel time and prepare for potential disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities.
