The spring sitting of the Prince Edward Island legislature has been delayed by a month, now scheduled to commence on March 24th. Premier Rob Lantz's office announced the postponement, citing the need for additional time to finalize the province's spring operating budget. The sitting was originally slated to begin on February 24th.
Lantz stated his government is working to finalize the budget and make necessary decisions. He also indicated the new sitting would begin with a speech from the throne, outlining an "ambitious agenda". Lantz has told his caucus to expect a long and productive session. Proposed changes to the province's Child, Youth and Family Services Act are expected to be introduced, clarifying the duty to report potential harm to children.
The delay has been met with criticism from opposition parties. Green Party leader Matt MacFarlane called the prorogation "unacceptable", noting the Finance Department has adequate staff to ensure the budget is ready on time. MacFarlane voiced concern for non-profit organizations that rely on spring budget funding for their operations. This marks the second time in 12 months the P. E. I. legislature's spring sitting has been delayed.
The sitting will be held in the Coles Building while renovations continue at Province House. The renovations, overseen by Parks Canada, began in 2015 and have cost taxpayers nearly $140 million. A specific reopening date for Province House remains unclear.
