Ottawa is set to spend almost $2 billion over the next four years to purchase 190 Canadian-made armoured combat support vehicles. The deal, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney, will see the vehicles built by General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada at their London, Ontario facility. This procurement is a key part of Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy, focusing on strengthening national security capabilities through domestic suppliers.

The acquisition will increase the Canadian Armed Forces' armoured vehicle fleet from 360 to 550 vehicles, ensuring troops have modern equipment for decades to come. Prime Minister Carney highlighted that the partnership with General Dynamics exemplifies the government's "Build, Partner, Buy" framework, which prioritizes domestic industry, research and development, and job creation across the country.

This investment is expected to create or sustain over 6,000 high-paying jobs annually in Canada over the next eight years, drawing on more than 600 Canadian suppliers in over 100 communities. The initiative also underscores Canada's commitment to supporting allies, with 35 of the existing armoured vehicles already committed for Ukraine's defence. The vehicles are designed to protect soldiers in demanding environments, offering advanced armour against threats like mines and enemy fire, combined with the mobility needed to keep pace with front-line forces.
