Grande Prairie's Oliver Dawson, an 18-year-old swimming prodigy from northern Alberta, is rapidly rewriting Canadian swimming history. He recently shattered two national breaststroke records at an international competition in London, with times of 27.29 seconds in the 50-metre sprint and 59.33 seconds in the 100-metre event. These impressive feats eclipse previous records set in 2009 and 2012, showcasing Dawson's exceptional talent and rapid improvement.

Dawson's rapid ascent has not gone unnoticed. Swim Alberta executive director Shawn Holman described Dawson as someone who is "rewriting record books" and noted his "phenomenal" trajectory. The young swimmer, who also earned a bronze medal at the world championships in Singapore, will be competing at the 2026 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials in Montreal and will represent Canada at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Dawson was honoured as the parade marshal for Grande Prairie's Canada Day festivities, a testament to his growing profile and inspiration to his community. While he narrowly missed breaking the 200-metre breaststroke record, Dawson remains optimistic about future opportunities. His success highlights a strong wave of Canadian talent in swimming, with other athletes like Alexanne Lepage also recently setting national records.
