The National Hockey League has announced the top ten candidates for the 2026 Mr. Hockey Award. This award, officially known as the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.
The trophy is named in honor of the late Bill Masterton, a Minnesota North Stars player who tragically died on January 15, 1968, due to an on-ice injury. Masterton was known for his dedication to hockey and exemplary sportsmanship. The Professional Hockey Writers' Association selects the winner, with each team nominating one player. It is often awarded to a player who has overcome significant challenges, such as career-threatening illnesses or injuries.
Sean Monahan of the Columbus Blue Jackets won the 2024-25 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. Monahan, who joined Columbus on July 1, 2024, reunited with Johnny Gaudreau after playing together for nine seasons in Calgary. His selection was especially poignant given the tragic death of Gaudreau in August 2024.
The winner of the Mr. Hockey Award will be announced later this year. The award continues to honor players who demonstrate exceptional dedication and perseverance in the face of adversity.
