The Nelson Police Department (NPD) is bringing the excitement of NHL Street hockey to Nelson youth this spring, launching a new program designed to be fun, inclusive, and accessible. Deputy Chief Jason Jewkes is spearheading the initiative, with the goal of introducing kids to hockey in a welcoming and affordable way.
The NHL Street program is the NHL's official youth street hockey league, offering a neighborhood-based model that allows children aged 6-13 to learn and play the game. The program will run for four weeks, on May 23, May 30, June 6, and June 13, at the Lions Park basketball court. Each session includes a 20-minute practice followed by a game consisting of two 20-minute halves, scheduled between 8 a. m. and 12 p. m.
Registration for the program is $25 and includes an official NHL Street jersey. Recognizing that cost can be a barrier, the NPD is also offering a no-cost registration option for families who may find the fee challenging. Community members can also support the initiative by sponsoring a player for $25. The Nelson Police Foundation is supporting the program with a $2,500 contribution, approved by the Nelson Police Board. The funding will be used to purchase equipment for ongoing use and reduce participation fees from approximately $100 to $25.
The Nelson Police Department hopes the program will introduce many young people to hockey, helping them build confidence, develop skills, and foster a lifelong connection to the sport. Jewkes also expressed hope that the program would attract both boys and girls and potentially lead participants to organized ice hockey programs.
