The NBA's extensive investigation into allegations surrounding Kawhi Leonard's endorsement deal with Aspiration, a company with ties to Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, has reportedly concluded its fact-finding phase. However, the blockbuster trade that would send Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors remains on hold as the league reviews the findings and determines if any disciplinary action will be taken against Leonard, the Clippers, or Ballmer.
The probe centers on claims that the $28 million endorsement agreement, which included company equity but minimal promotional work from Leonard, may have been used to circumvent the NBA's salary cap. The Clippers organization has maintained its innocence, asserting they were victims of fraud related to Aspiration rather than active participants in a cap-circumvention scheme.
According to reports, an independent law firm hired by the NBA has completed its work. The league office is now meticulously examining the collected evidence. "The investigation, I think, is over now," stated Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. "The NBA is kind of like sifting through what the law firm they hired has found, deciding whether there's a punishment or not that they then want to levy."
While the investigative phase is complete, the resolution process is expected to be lengthy. Any potential penalties may require review by an arbitrator under the collective bargaining agreement, and the National Basketball Players Association could become involved if Leonard faces sanctions, with either party retaining the right to appeal. Despite the ongoing uncertainty, Vorkunov still anticipates the trade to Toronto will eventually occur, potentially with adjusted terms if any suspensions are issued.
The proposed trade, which would send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and future draft assets to Toronto in exchange for Leonard, was initially put on hold in early July.
