Four Republican members of the U. S. House of Representatives from Michigan have penned a strong letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, demanding immediate action on the persistent issue of wildfire smoke drifting from Canada into their state. Titled "Canada's Apologies Won't Clear Michigan's Skies," the letter, dated July 16, 2026, indicates that patience has run out among the constituents of Representatives Jack Bergman, John James, Lisa McClain, and John Moolenaar.
The Michigan representatives stated that despite previous conversations and assurances, Canada's efforts to mitigate wildfires have been insufficient, leading to unacceptable air quality for American citizens. They specifically cited a perceived "chronic under-investment" in wildfire prevention methods such as forest thinning, fuel reduction, and prescribed burns, as well as inadequate enforcement against arson. This marks the fourth consecutive summer that Michigan has experienced significant smoke impacts from Canadian wildfires, with Detroit recording the world's worst air quality on Thursday, July 16, 2026, due to fine particulate matter.
The lawmakers warned that if Canada fails to adequately manage its forests and control the wildfires, the United States may be forced to "look elsewhere, and act on our own, to protect our people." This could involve exploring "direct involvement in cross-border fuel reduction and firefighting capacity." They expressed concern that their constituents, including vulnerable populations like children and those with pre-existing health conditions, are suffering the health consequences of fires that did not originate in their region. The letter suggests a reevaluation of the bilateral relationship if the issue of wildfire smoke continues to impact Americans.
