Mark Wiseman has commenced his duties as Canada's new ambassador to the United States, assuming the role on February 15, 2026. Prime Minister Mark Carney initially announced Wiseman's appointment in December, highlighting his extensive background in law, business, and finance. Wiseman succeeds Kirsten Hillman, who concluded her service after deepening Canada-U. S. ties.
Wiseman brings over three decades of experience to the position, having held leadership roles at the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and the Alberta Investment Management Corporation. He also served on the Prime Minister's Council on Canada-U. S. Relations. His expertise is expected to be invaluable in advancing key Canada-U. S. priorities.
These priorities include ensuring secure borders, reinforcing trade and investment relationships, and fostering cooperation on global challenges. Wiseman's appointment occurs during a period of transformation in the Canada-U. S. relationship, particularly concerning trade. He is expected to play a central role in the upcoming Canada-U. S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) review talks.
Prime Minister Carney has expressed confidence in Wiseman's ability to represent Canadian interests effectively. Quoting Carney, "Mark Wiseman brings immense experience, extensive contacts, and deep commitment at this crucial time of transformation of our relationship with the United States". His efforts will focus on creating opportunities for both Canadian and American workers, businesses, and institutions.
