The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant move to strengthen their forward lineup, acquiring Nick Paul from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The trade, announced on July 1, 2026, saw the Maple Leafs send goaltender Dennis Hildeby, a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, and a third-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft to Tampa Bay.
Paul, a 31-year-old forward, brings a seasoned presence to Toronto. Last season, he recorded 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 51 games for the Lightning. His NHL career includes over 500 games played with the Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay, accumulating 214 points. Paul also has a notable international record, having won gold at the 2021 IIHF World Championship and the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.
The acquisition of Paul addresses the Maple Leafs' need for added scoring and a defensive presence. With the team undergoing a significant roster overhaul, this move signals a win-now approach for the upcoming season. Hildeby, a young goaltender drafted by the Maple Leafs in 2022, had become expendable following other roster moves. This trade marks another strategic play by Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka as the team aims for a Stanley Cup contention.
The deal also comes amidst broader NHL activity, with several other trades and free-agent signings occurring around the league on July 1st. The Maple Leafs continue to be active in reshaping their roster to compete at the highest level.
