Edmonton police have arrested a 22-year-old man wanted on Canada-wide warrants in connection with a sophisticated extortion network that has targeted South Asian business owners across the country. The arrest of Safaldeep Singh is the latest development in Project Insight, an ongoing investigation into criminal activities affecting the South Asian community in Alberta's capital.
The investigation gained momentum following a traffic stop on May 4, where police seized drugs and a loaded firearm. Three individuals were arrested, and Singh was identified as having alleged ties to the "For Brothers" gang, a group implicated in shootings and extortions across Canada and the United States. Subsequent searches of Singh's residence allegedly uncovered evidence related to vehicle re-vinning operations, often linked to extortion crimes.
On June 23, Singh was formally arrested and charged with several offences, including trafficking in property obtained by crime and unauthorized possession of a firearm. He was subsequently transferred to Ontario, where he faces Canada-wide warrants for conspiracy to commit murder and extortion. Police noted that the allegations against him have not yet been tested in court.
Staff Sergeant Eric Stewart of the Edmonton Police Service emphasized the importance of inter-provincial collaboration, stating, "We have established a coordinated approach with a focus on effective intelligence collection, sharing, and enforcement action across provinces." He also expressed gratitude to the Canada Border Services Agency and Peel Regional Police for their crucial assistance in the case.
