Konsta Helenius's dramatic overtime goal secured Finland's victory over Switzerland in the Ice Hockey World Championship final held in Zurich on May 31, 2026. The 1-0 win marks Finland's first World Championship title since 2022 and their fifth overall. The game was a tense, defensive battle, with neither team able to score during regulation time.

The sold-out crowd in Zurich watched as both teams traded chances, but were repeatedly denied by stellar goaltending. Switzerland's Leonardo Genoni and Finland's Justus Annunen stood tall, keeping the game scoreless through three periods. Annunen ultimately recorded a shutout with 22 saves. The tension finally broke 10:42 into overtime when Helenius, a forward for the Buffalo Sabres, fired a shot from the right circle that beat Genoni, sending the Finnish bench into a frenzy.

For the Swiss, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow, marking their third consecutive defeat in the final. "Third time we're right there, one goal again and we just couldn't manage to score it, just very frustrating," said New Jersey Devils forward and Swiss alternate captain Nico Hischier. He acknowledged the support of the home crowd, adding, "It just sucks we didn't finish the job for them, for all of Switzerland".

Earlier in the day, Norway stunned Canada in the bronze-medal game, winning 3-2 in overtime for their first-ever medal in a major international competition. The Canadian team will look to regroup as they set their sights on future tournaments. Meanwhile, Finland celebrates a well-earned victory, proving their dominance on the ice once again.
