Harper Urges Unity to Preserve Canada's Independence

Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called on Canadians to prioritize the preservation of the country's existence, urging leaders to stand against what he described as the "woke denigration of Canada". Speaking at the unveiling of his official portrait in Ottawa on Tuesday, Harper stressed the need for national unity and independence in the face of both external and internal challenges.

Harper, who served as Prime Minister for nearly a decade, highlighted the importance of recognizing and safeguarding Canada's distinct history, identity, and cultures. He emphasized that while Canada maintains a strong alliance with the United States, it should avoid becoming overly dependent. Harper stated, "Our pride doesn't just have to be not liking Donald Trump. We should be proud of who we are as a nation. I love the United States but I'm not American. I think our country is different and worth preserving".

Harper's remarks come at a time when some perceive threats to Canadian sovereignty, including potential economic and political pressures from the United States. He urged both the Liberal and Conservative parties to unite against external forces that threaten Canada's independence and against domestic policies that threaten its unity. He also cautioned against policies that could undermine national unity, referencing separatist movements within Alberta.

The former prime minister's portrait, painted by Toronto artist Josh Richards, will be displayed alongside those of other former prime ministers. Harper expressed his hope that it would serve as a reminder of the importance of defending Canada's interests and preserving its unique identity for future generations.
