GST Credit Top-Up Arriving This Spring for Canadians

Share:

Canadians who receive the GST benefit can expect a one-time top-up payment this spring, thanks to the fast-tracking of legislation in Parliament. The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit received royal assent, passing final votes in both the Senate and the House of Commons. This measure is designed to provide financial relief to low and modest-income Canadians amidst rising grocery costs.

The Department of Finance has announced that the benefit will offer a one-time top-up payment equivalent to 50 percent of the GST credit "as early as possible this spring". Furthermore, the standard GST benefit, which supports Canadians with low and modest incomes, will increase by 25 percent for five years starting in July. The federal government estimates that over 12 million Canadians will benefit from these combined measures. A family of four, for instance, could receive up to $1,890 this year and approximately $1,400 annually for the subsequent four years.

The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment intended to help Canadians with low and modest incomes offset the GST or HST they pay. Eligibility for the GST credit generally extends to Canadian residents aged 19 or older. Those under 19 may also be eligible if they have, or previously had, a spouse or common-law partner, or if they are parents residing with their child. For the 2024 base year, a single individual could receive up to $533, while a married or common-law couple could receive up to $698, plus $184 for each child under 19.

While the Conservative party supported the bill's swift passage in the House, they have characterized the measures as a "Band-Aid solution". Despite differing opinions on the long-term effectiveness, the immediate top-up will provide welcome financial assistance to many Canadian families as they grapple with increasing costs of living.
