Gladu Joins Liberals: Carney Confident on Social Issues Vote

Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed that Marilyn Gladu, the former Conservative MP who recently crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party, will vote with the government on social issues. This assurance comes after discussions between Carney and Gladu regarding her previous stances on certain social matters. Gladu's move to the Liberal caucus is the fifth instance of an opposition MP joining the Liberals since last year's election, bringing the Liberals closer to a majority government.

Carney addressed concerns about Gladu's historically conservative positions on social issues, stating, "I had discussions and colleagues had discussions with Ms. Gladu about those issues. She will vote with the government if there are votes relating to any aspect of that issue, as well as the rights of Canadians to be their whole selves, to love who they love". The NDP, however, has criticized the move, with NDP MP Leah Gazan calling Gladu a "far-right social conservative". Gazan stated that it is not surprising that Carney is sacrificing Liberal positions on fundamental rights in his drive to stitch together a majority government.

Gladu, who has represented the riding of Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong since 2015, stated that she is ready to work with Prime Minister Carney to build a stronger and more independent Canadian economy. She also mentioned that her district "was always a bellwether riding". Carney welcomed Gladu to the caucus, highlighting her experience as an engineer and in international business. "She brings tremendous experience... and she's going to be a great member of our team," Carney said.

The addition of Gladu to the Liberal caucus comes ahead of three byelections next week. The Liberals are hoping to win in Scarborough Southwest and University—Rosedale, ridings formerly held by prominent cabinet ministers, and are also aiming to pick up a seat in Terrebonne, Quebec.
