The Calgary Flames made a move to shore up their defensive depth on Monday, acquiring defenseman Gavin White from the Dallas Stars in exchange for Jérémie Poirier. White, a 23-year-old native of Brockville, Ontario, will be assigned to the Calgary Wranglers of the AHL. Poirier, also 23, had been playing for the Wranglers.

White was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the fourth round, 115th overall, in the 2022 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, White played junior hockey in the OHL, winning championships with both the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2021-22 and the Peterborough Petes in 2022-23. He has yet to make his NHL debut. This season with the Texas Stars of the AHL, White has recorded three goals and two assists in 23 games.

Poirier, a third-round pick (72nd overall) by the Flames in the 2020 NHL Draft, has also not yet appeared in an NHL game. In 35 games with the Wranglers this season, he has one goal and five assists. According to reports, the Flames were looking to add a right-handed defenseman to their system, which prompted the trade.

The trade deadline is approaching on February 5th, and this move could be the first of several for the Flames as they continue to evaluate their roster. The team is looking to make more moves to improve their roster before the deadline.
