Edmonton Women's Shelter Shuts Down After Lease Expires

Share:

Edmonton has lost a vital resource for women in need as the Elizabeth Fry Society of Northern Alberta's Community of Hope Emergency Shelter closed on April 11, 2026. The closure comes after the City of Edmonton declined to renew the society's lease for the land near the Belvedere LRT Station. This decision has resulted in the loss of approximately 100 shelter spaces in the city, intensifying concerns about support for vulnerable women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.

The Elizabeth Fry Society had been operating the temporary shelter on the Fort Road site since 2024. The city initially granted the land with the understanding that it would be a temporary arrangement. While the lease was set to expire in November 2025, the city extended it until March 31, 2026, to ensure shelter availability throughout the winter months. However, the society's request for a further extension until July 2026 was denied.

According to a memo to city council, the decision not to extend the lease was made to "reduce uncertainty and concern in the community" regarding future development on the land. The city has indicated that it will assist the Elizabeth Fry Society in expediting development permits and safety code inspections once a new shelter location is secured.

Toni Sinclair, the executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society, stated that planning is underway to establish shelter services at a new location, but details are still evolving. In the meantime, the closure leaves a significant gap in Edmonton's support system for women experiencing or at risk of homelessness and criminalization. Since opening in 2024, the shelter provided services to over 3,400 people. The land has been listed for sale for redevelopment.
