Dion Slams Alberta Separatists, Questions Smith's Stance

Stéphane Dion, the architect of the Clarity Act, has strongly criticized the growing separatist sentiment in Alberta and is pressing Premier Danielle Smith to clearly state her position on the matter. In an interview on Rosemary Barton Live, Dion, who served as intergovernmental affairs minister under Jean Chrétien, voiced his concerns. The Clarity Act, which he tabled after the 1995 Quebec referendum, outlines the requirements for a province to secede from Canada.

Dion stated he has "no patience for separatist blackmail" and questioned Smith's commitment to keeping Alberta within Canada. He argued that Smith needs to clarify whether she cares if Alberta remains part of Canada. While Smith has said she supports "a sovereign Alberta within a united Canada," her government has reduced the signature requirements for a referendum, a move Dion called "irresponsible". The signature threshold decreased from approximately 600,000 to about 177,000 signatures.

Dion also emphasized that Smith should explain the next steps following a referendum, including who would lead negotiations for Alberta. He questioned whether Smith, if opposed to separation, should lead those negotiations. Dion stated that it would create a "mess" if she were to lead negotiations for something she does not believe in and that she needs to clarify what that means for Albertans and Canadians.

Dion's remarks come as Alberta faces renewed discussions about its place in Canada, with some advocating for greater autonomy or outright separation. The former Liberal leader's intervention highlights the ongoing debate about national unity and the challenges of balancing regional aspirations with the broader interests of the country.
