Clark's Hockey Jersey Stunt at Canadian Open Draws Boos

Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U. S. Open champion, caused a stir at the RBC Canadian Open this past Saturday by wearing a Jack Hughes Team USA Olympic hockey jersey on the 14th hole, famously known as "The Rink." The gesture, intended as a playful jab at the Canadian fans, was met with a chorus of boos, a reaction Clark seemed to anticipate.

The specific jersey choice was a direct reference to Team USA's dramatic overtime victory against Canada in the gold medal game of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Jack Hughes was a key player in that victory, scoring the decisive goal. Clark, unable to find a similar jersey online to be shipped to Canada in time, purchased one from a fan. He later stated his intention to mail the jersey back to its original owner, emphasizing that his actions were meant to celebrate a U. S. win and not to disrespect Canada.

Despite the jeers, Clark managed to hit his tee shot to within four feet of the hole and sank the subsequent birdie putt. He even put the jersey back on to walk to the green, further engaging with the boisterous crowd. Clark, who has a history of fiery competition, particularly during the 2024 Presidents Cup held in Montreal, appeared unfazed by the antagonistic reception. He finished the third round tied for second place and entered Sunday's final round in contention for the title.

The incident added a unique element of sports rivalry and banter to the tournament, highlighting the passionate sports culture in Canada, especially concerning hockey. While some fans expressed their displeasure, others acknowledged Clark's boldness and the entertainment value it brought to the event.
