Macklin Celebrini, the 20-year-old sensation from North Vancouver, British Columbia, has been awarded the prestigious IIHF Male Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season. Celebrini, who plays for the San Jose Sharks, earned the honour after a remarkable year that saw him excel in both professional and international hockey.
The voting, which included nearly 200 members of the media and the IIHF family, saw Celebrini receive a commanding 40.8 per cent of the votes. He finished ahead of American goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and Finnish forward Sebastian Aho. Canada's own Connor McDavid also featured in the rankings.
Celebrini's performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics was a highlight, where he led all players in goals with five and was second in scoring with ten points. He helped Canada secure a silver medal and was named to the tournament's All-Star Team. He continued his impressive international play by captaining Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship, where he finished second in scoring and was named the Directorate Best Forward. In the NHL, Celebrini had a standout season, finishing fourth in league scoring with 115 points. This remarkable total was the third-highest ever recorded by a teenager, following in the footsteps of legends Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby.
The IIHF Male Player of the Year trophy will be housed permanently at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, with the winner receiving a smaller version to keep. The IIHF will announce the date for the official award ceremony at a later time.
