Carney Liberals Surge: Approval Soars, Tories Trail by 10

Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal government are experiencing a significant upswing in approval ratings, according to a new poll by Abacus Data. The poll reveals that 57% of Canadians approve of the federal government's performance, marking a new high for the Carney government since the last federal election. This positive momentum translates to a notable lead in voter intention, with the Liberals polling at 46% compared to the Conservative Party's 36%.

This surge in popularity comes after a year marked by significant political events, including floor crossings, a budget vote, and the transition to a majority government. Despite challenges such as international conflicts and trade pressures from the United States, the Carney government appears to have resonated with Canadians. According to Abacus Data, a majority of Canadians (55%) believe that Carney's government represents a genuine break from the Trudeau years, which may be contributing to the increase in support.

Carney's personal approval numbers remain strong, with a net impression of +26. In contrast, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre holds a net impression of -10. The poll also indicates that the Liberals maintain a strong accessible voter pool of 60%, compared to 49% for the Conservatives and 32% for the NDP. The Liberals also lead among voters who prioritize key issues such as cost of living, the economy, healthcare, and housing.

While it is still relatively early in the government's mandate, these numbers suggest a shifting political landscape in Canada. The Liberal's ability to maintain this lead will depend on their performance on key policy issues and their ability to continue differentiating themselves from previous administrations.
