Carney Invites India's Modi to Canada for G7 Security Talks

Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Canada for an official visit later this year, a move that signals a continued effort to thaw relations between the two nations. The invitation came after the two leaders met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit held in France.

During their meeting, Carney and Modi agreed to launch negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA). This agreement aims to enhance the exchange of classified defence and security information, a crucial step in strengthening bilateral cooperation. The readout of the meeting also indicated that both leaders are looking forward to future dialogues in the areas of defence, finance, and migration.

Modi formally thanked Carney for the invitation to visit Canada in 2026, with both sides agreeing to work through diplomatic channels to set a mutually convenient date. This diplomatic engagement follows a period of strained relations between Canada and India, with Carney actively pursuing closer ties. The move also comes as Canada seeks to strengthen relationships with various countries in response to evolving global trade dynamics.

The meeting did not include any mention of foreign interference or transnational repression, issues that have previously strained relations between Canada and India. However, the agreement to pursue a GSOIA suggests a commitment to moving forward on security and defence matters, a key focus for Canada's current international agenda.
