Carney Begins Search for New Supreme Court Justice

Share:

Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially launched the search for a new justice to fill the upcoming vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada, following the retirement of Justice Sheilah Martin on May 30. The Prime Minister's Office announced that qualified candidates from Western and Northern Canada are invited to apply, adhering to the convention of regional representation on the court. The application period is open until April 27.

The selection process involves an independent advisory board that will review applications and submit a shortlist of qualified candidates to Prime Minister Carney. This non-partisan board is tasked with identifying jurists of the highest calibre who are functionally bilingual and representative of Canada's diversity. The Prime Minister has expressed gratitude to Justice Martin for her years of service, leadership, and dedication to Canada's highest court.

Justice Martin was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2017 and previously served on the Court of Appeal of Alberta, as well as the courts of appeal of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Her retirement marks a significant transition for the Supreme Court, which continues to address challenging legal questions, including those related to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The government emphasizes the importance of maintaining the court's integrity, independence, and commitment to the rule of law throughout the selection process.

The Prime Minister stated, "The Supreme Court of Canada is a pillar of our democracy... This process will ensure the high standards that responsibility demands". The selection process aims to uphold these high standards and ensure the appointment of a highly qualified individual to serve on Canada's highest judicial body.
