Carney Backs US Action Against Iran Nuclear Program

Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared Canada's support for the United States' actions, alongside Israel, targeting Iran's nuclear program. Speaking from Mumbai, where he is attending the Canada-India Growth and Investment Forum, Carney stated that Iran "must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons". He described the country as "the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East".

Carney emphasized that Canada was not involved in the military planning or buildup leading to the strikes. His primary concern is averting nuclear proliferation, promoting regional stability, and safeguarding civilian lives. He also said that the issue of geopolitical and global security is more important than any potential financial impact.

The U. S. military action, justified by President Donald Trump, claims Iran was continuing its nuclear program and developing missiles. The initial strikes reportedly hit areas near the offices of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced a "first wave" of drone and missile attacks targeting Israel.

Carney urged Canadians in Iran to shelter in place and those in the wider region to take necessary precautions. Global Affairs Canada has updated travel advisories for Gulf nations, cautioning about ongoing military activity. The Prime Minister's stance echoes that of Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who stated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is justified.
