Prime Minister Mark Carney has initiated his first round of Senate appointments since taking office, naming four individuals to the upper chamber. Among the appointees is Conservative MP Richard Martel, who will step down from his role in the House of Commons. This decision marks a significant shift, as Carney's office has confirmed the removal of the non-partisan criterion previously used for Senate appointments.
Martel, the MP for Chicoutimi—Le Fjord, was first elected in 2018 and narrowly secured re-election in 2025. His departure is the fifth instance of a Conservative MP leaving the party's caucus since the last federal election. The Prime Minister's Office stated that the new appointees bring a wealth of experience in critical areas such as technology, artificial intelligence, business, and health care, which will strengthen the Senate's legislative scrutiny.
Also appointed to the Senate is Tom Pitfield, a senior Liberal strategist and Carney's principal secretary, who has been instrumental in advising the Prime Minister on government priorities including artificial intelligence and Canada's digital economy. The appointments also include Dr. Rodney Ouellette, a cancer researcher from New Brunswick, and Geeta Tucker, a chartered professional accountant from Manitoba. These appointments leave six vacancies remaining in the Senate, with five more anticipated by year's end.
