The Montreal Canadiens have officially added forward Brett Berard to their lineup, signing him to a one-year contract as they set their sights on another deep playoff run. The acquisition, finalized with a one-year, two-way deal on July 9, 2026, follows an earlier trade with the New York Rangers on June 26 for defenseman William Trudeau. Berard, a 23-year-old winger, brings a new dynamic to the Canadiens' forward group as they aim to build on their recent performances, which included a trip to the Eastern Conference Final in the 2025-26 season.
Berard, acquired from the Rangers for defenseman William Trudeau, spent last season splitting time between New York and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. In 13 NHL games with the Rangers, he registered no points, but contributed six goals and 22 assists in 41 AHL games with the Wolf Pack. His professional career includes 40 goals and 53 assists in 145 AHL contests over four seasons. The Canadiens are hopeful that a change of scenery will help Berard rediscover his scoring touch, as he was a notable scorer in his previous junior and college careers.
The signing of Berard is part of a series of moves by the Canadiens' management as they continue to shape their roster for the 2026-27 season. General Manager Kent Hughes has been focused on building a sustainable contender, prioritizing internal development and strategic acquisitions. With core players like Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky already under long-term contracts, the team is building a strong foundation for sustained success. The addition of Berard, alongside other roster adjustments and contract extensions, signals the Canadiens' commitment to improving their team and making another serious push for the Stanley Cup.
