Canadian Trips to U.S. Slowly Increasing

Share:

Canadian resident return trips from the United States saw a slight increase in June, marking the third consecutive month of year-over-year growth. Statistics Canada reported a 3.2 per cent rise in June compared to the previous year, bringing the total to 1.7 million return trips. This uptick, however, still leaves travel numbers significantly below those recorded in June 2024, before political tensions and trade disputes deterred many Canadians from visiting their southern neighbours.

The growth in cross-border travel was primarily driven by an increase in car trips, which rose by 5.2 per cent. Conversely, air travel from the U. S. to Canada experienced a 3.8 per cent decrease. This trend suggests that while some Canadians are opting for road trips, air travel remains subdued. Despite the positive year-over-year trend, overall travel volume in June was nearly 29 per cent lower than in June 2024.

The prolonged travel boycott, which began in response to U. S. President Donald Trump's rhetoric and policies, led many Canadians to redirect their travel plans to domestic or overseas destinations. While the recent increases offer a glimmer of hope for U. S. border economies, experts suggest that a full return to pre-2025 travel levels is unlikely in the near future. The shift in Canadian travel habits reflects a complex interplay of political sentiment, economic factors, and evolving consumer preferences.
