A member of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) died in Latvia on January 30, 2026. The Department of National Defence confirmed the death, stating that the member was serving as part of Operation REASSURANCE, Canada's contribution to NATO's enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia.

The circumstances surrounding the death are currently under investigation. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Department of National Defence has stated that it is providing full support to the member's family and colleagues during this difficult time.

Operation REASSURANCE involves approximately 1,000 CAF personnel deployed to Latvia, where they form the core of a multinational battlegroup. Canada has been leading this battlegroup since 2017 as part of NATO's efforts to deter Russian aggression. The mission aims to enhance the security and stability of the region.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own," said a statement from the Department of National Defence. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the fallen member. We will continue to provide them with the support they need." This incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by Canadian Armed Forces members who are serving abroad to promote peace and security.
