Canada is looking to quantum computing as a pivotal opportunity to regain its footing on the global technological stage, particularly after acknowledging what some perceive as missed chances in the artificial intelligence race. While AI development has rapidly reshaped industries, Canada is now channeling substantial resources and expertise into quantum technologies, aiming to become a world leader in this complex and promising field.

Recent government investments signal a strong commitment. In March 2026, a $900 million allocation as part of Canada's Defense Industrial Strategy was announced to bolster quantum technology, with a focus on computing, sensing, and communication. This was followed by an investment of up to $92 million to launch the Canadian Quantum Champions Program (CQCP), designed to anchor quantum companies and talent within Canada. These initiatives are part of a broader National Quantum Strategy (NQS), which has already seen significant federal funding and provincial support across the country, including hubs in Waterloo, Calgary, Sherbrooke, and Vancouver.

The ambition is substantial: Canada's quantum sector is projected to become a $139 billion industry by 2045, creating over 200,000 jobs. Companies like Xanadu, a Toronto-based quantum computing firm, are at the forefront of this national effort, developing cloud-accessible photonic quantum computers and open-source software. This strategic pivot towards quantum computing is seen as a crucial second chance for Canada to establish dominance in a technology poised to redefine industries from cybersecurity to drug discovery.
